WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus emphasized that the WHO Academy is the cornerstone of the organization’s transformation agenda launched in 2017 to make it more responsive to the needs of countries.

Ghebreyesus highlighted that amidst significant changes in strategy, processes, financing, and culture, the academy stands out as a tool for enhancing the capacities of the WHO workforce and member states, adding:

“The COVID-19 pandemic exposed a global gap of 10 million and underscored the critical value of health workers. Lifelong learning, combined with the latest scientific advancements, will be key to closing this gap and improving quality worldwide.”

Ghebreyesus also noted that while the WHO has always been a leader in technical guidance on health issues, implementing these standards is often challenging due to insufficient training. “The academy helps close this gap by providing state-of-the-art learning solutions tailored to the needs of today’s health workers, including emergency preparedness and response,” he added.
