Guterres on Srebrenica: Hate speech is on the rise
New York, July 9 (Hibya) - United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commemorated the victims of the Srebrenica genocide and warned against the growing rise of hate speech and discrimination.
In a post on social media, Guterres said that as the victims of the 1995 Srebrenica genocide are being commemorated, the world is once again witnessing a rise in hate speech.
"We must confront the difficult reality that hate speech is increasing, fuelling discrimination, extremism and social divisions," Guterres said, stressing that such warning signs cannot be ignored.
The UN Secretary-General called on the international community to "combat denial with truth, and impunity with justice."
The killing of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in Srebrenica in July 1995 has been recognised as genocide by international courts.
