Hamas will not negotiate with mediators until prisoners are released
Stockholm, February 24 (Hibya) - The Hamas movement announced that it will not discuss the release of hostages and the continuation of the ceasefire unless the Israeli government releases more than 600 Palestinians from prison.
According to the first phase of the Israel-Hamas hostage release and ceasefire agreement, after six Israeli hostages were freed from Gaza, the release of more than 600 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails was expected on February 22.
However, according to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, the release of these prisoners will be delayed "until the release of the next hostages is guaranteed and without humiliating ceremonies."
Hamas spokesman Bassem Naim stated that Israel’s decision not to release the prisoners had broken the current ceasefire.
Under the terms of the agreement, Hamas released six hostages on Saturday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later announced that prisoners would not be released until Hamas ceased its "humiliating actions" during hostage releases.
