Israel to cut electricity in Gaza
Stockholm, March 10 (Hibya) - Israel will cut all remaining electricity supplies to Gaza as part of an effort to increase pressure on Hamas amid increasingly chaotic multichannel negotiations over the fragile ceasefire in the region.
The consequences of this decision for the 2.3 million residents of the devastated Palestinian territories remain uncertain, as most rely on diesel-powered generators for electricity.
However, humanitarian workers in Gaza, contacted on Sunday afternoon, said that two desalination plants would be forced to shut down, further reducing the already insufficient supply of clean water. Others suggested that the remaining sewage treatment facility could also be affected.
Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen said in a video announcing the directive that Israel "will use all available means to ensure the return of all Israeli hostages" and that Hamas will not remain in Gaza after the war.
Israel is attempting to force Hamas to agree to an extension of the first phase of the ceasefire, which came into effect in mid-January, until mid-April. Israel has also cut off all supplies to the region, accusing Hamas of stealing aid and profiting from its distribution.
Additionally, Israel has intensified attacks on Gaza, and military officials have informed local and international journalists that preparations for a major assault are ongoing.
