Kallas: Ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is an urgent priority
Brussels, April 2 (Hibya) – European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas stated after her meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that Iran’s attacks on civilian vessels have brought traffic in the Strait of Hormuz almost to a halt.
EU High Representative Kaja Kallas made a statement regarding the situation in Iran and its global repercussions following a phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Referring to the scope of the discussion, Kallas said: "Today I had a phone call with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss the situation in Iran and its impact on the global economy and energy security. We also addressed EU-China relations."
Drawing attention to the critical situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Kallas stated: "Iran’s attacks on civilian vessels and the threat of further attacks have nearly brought traffic in the Strait of Hormuz to a standstill. Therefore, restoring safe and free navigation in the Strait in accordance with the Law of the Sea is an urgent priority."
Regarding the EU’s position, Kallas added: "The EU supports all diplomatic efforts to achieve this goal and calls for de-escalation and restraint. Attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure must end."
