Kallas: Protecting the International Criminal Court is a priority for the EU
Brussels, October 9 (Hibya) - EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said she met International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane following the United States’ announcement of its intention to impose sanctions, adding that the EU has different options to ensure the court can continue its work.
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said the International Criminal Court (ICC) is a cornerstone of the international criminal justice system and prosecutes those responsible for the gravest crimes under international law.
Kallas said she met ICC President Tomoko Akane after the United States announced its intention to impose sanctions, noting that the six-month period before the sanctions take effect provides an opportunity for dialogue.
Kallas stressed that the EU has always supported the ICC, adding that the Union has various options to ensure the court can continue its work and that protecting the ICC is a priority for the EU.
