Nepali experts: Landslide was caused by glacier collapse in our country
The landslide that occurred in Nepal on August 26 caused fatalities and left many people missing around the Gyirong Border Crossing in Xigaze city, in China's Xizang Autonomous Region.
Experts working at a research institution in Nepal told a China Media Group (CMG) reporter that the disaster was caused by a glacier collapse within Nepal's borders.
The CMG reporter examined on site satellite images analyzed by experts at a research center affiliated with Nepal's Tribhuvan University. According to the experts' assessment, the glacier collapse occurred on the Nepali side of the Donglinzangbu River along the China-Nepal border, known in Nepal as the Lhende River.
The experts noted that water formed by melting glaciers flows into the river under normal conditions as well, but emphasized that this time the sudden collapse generated an enormous driving force. Large masses of ice that broke away from the mountain rapidly descended into the valley, carrying soil and rocks with them.
The disaster caused severe damage on the Chinese side of the border, while on the Nepali side it directly affected settlements across a wide area in the country's interior.
