News website: Khaled Meshaal becomes new Hamas leader
Stockholm, October 18 (Hibya) - Citing sources, Lebanon's LBCI news website reported that Khaled Meshaal, the head of Hamas's foreign office, took over the Palestinian leadership following the killing of Yahya Sinwar, the head of Hamas's political bureau.
The sources confirm that Meshaal has assumed the role of interim Hamas leader and is now responsible for communicating with key parties involved in talks to release Israeli hostages.
"The Hamas leadership informed Turkish, Qatari and Egyptian officials that Sinwar had died in an operation in Tel al-Sultan and stressed that after his death, talks to exchange prisoners and end the war would become increasingly difficult," the sources said.
The Israel Defense Forces announced on Thursday that Sinwar had been killed in an Israeli military operation in southern Gaza on October 16.
