NYP: Ukraine open to the de facto recognition of Russian-controlled territories
New York, April 22 (Hibya) - The New York Post, citing an unnamed senior official from the US administration, reported that Kyiv is willing to give up 20% of its territory if de facto recognition is on the table.
According to the news source, during meetings between Kyiv and the US delegation last week, representatives of Kyiv expressed concerns about the portion of the agreement regarding "territories" that have become part of Russia following referendums.
Last week, White House Special Representative Steve Witkoff stated that he addressed the "territorial issue" in the context of settlements in Ukraine during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on April 11.
The NYP writes that US President Donald Trump's plan may also include deploying European forces to Ukraine to establish a contact line and ensure a ceasefire.
According to the paper, the use of a separate peacekeeping force in the form of a joint commission with participation from Russia, Ukraine, and a third country that is not a NATO member is being discussed. US participation could be financial, rather than military.
The paper also noted that Witkoff could present his final "best" offer in Moscow this week, which would likely include the lifting of some sanctions.
