Orban: We protected Hungarian families and future generations from a heavy financial burden
Budapest, December 19 (Hibya) – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said, commenting on European Union (EU) decisions on the use of Russian assets and the loan to be provided to Ukraine, “We protected Hungarian families and future generations from a heavy financial burden.”
Prime Minister Orban made remarks about the talks held within the EU. “We have left behind a long and difficult night. We managed to eliminate the risk of war,” he said.
Orban stated that they did not allow a decision to be taken, in his words tantamount to a declaration of war on Europe’s behalf, by using Russian assets: “This plan would drag Europe into war and impose a financial burden of 1 trillion forints on Hungary. We protected Hungarian families from that,” he said.
Prime Minister Orban noted that 24 EU member states decided to grant Ukraine a “war loan” for the next two years, adding: “If Ukraine cannot repay the loan, repayment will be covered by these countries.”
Referring also to Visegrad cooperation, Orban said: “Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic decided not to join this loan. In this way, we spared our children and grandchildren a debt burden of 90 billion euros. Hungary’s share would have been more than 400 billion forints.”
Claiming that war preparations are continuing in Brussels, Orban said: “Hungary will continue to be the voice of peace in Europe and will not allow Hungarian taxpayers’ money to be used to finance Ukraine.”
