Over 200 killed in recent attacks in Sudan
Stockholm, April 14 (Hibya) – The United Nations reported that more than 200 civilians have been killed in recent days in Sudan’s Darfur region in attacks carried out by militias affiliated with or allied to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Civil war broke out between the RSF and the Sudanese army in April 2023, and much of Darfur is currently under RSF control.
The attacks occurred near El Fasher, the last major city in Darfur held by the Sudanese army. RSF forces raided the nearby town of Um Kadadah, killing more than fifty people.
According to the UN, at least 70 people were killed in heavy attacks on El Fasher on April 11, and more than 100 were killed in assaults on refugee camps near the city. Among the dead were at least 20 children and nine aid workers.
UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, together with the French and German governments, has called a meeting in London on Tuesday to discuss a response to the war in Sudan. Around twenty countries are expected to attend, including some suspected of supporting the warring groups, possibly with arms.
Representatives of the RSF and Sudanese army were not invited to the meeting.
