Prevot: Attacks on peacekeeping forces are serious violations of international law
Brussels, April 18 (Hibya) – Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot condemned the attack carried out against French soldiers serving within UNIFIL in southern Lebanon.
Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot provided information on the losses suffered and the ceasefire process in the region.
Sharing details of the attack, Prevot said: “This morning, a French peacekeeper was killed in southern Lebanon. Three soldiers were also injured in the attack on UNIFIL.”
Speaking about Belgium’s position, Prevot said: “Belgium condemns this incident in the strongest possible terms and expresses its full solidarity with France, its armed forces, and the victims’ families.”
Providing information on the legal process, Prevot stated: “Attacks on peacekeeping forces are serious violations of international law and may amount to war crimes. Those responsible must be identified and brought to justice.”
Referring to the latest situation in the region and support, Prevot said: “A ceasefire has been declared. It must be respected by all parties without exception. Belgium reaffirms its full support for UNIFIL in carrying out its mission.”
