Prison population in England and Wales reaches record high
London, September 7 (Hibya) – According to The Guardian, the prison population in England and Wales has reached a new record high.
According to official figures, on Friday, there were 88,521 inmates in the prisons of the United Kingdom, which has a population of 68 million. This is 171 more inmates than the previous record set at the end of last week.
The prison population has increased by 1,025 inmates over the past four weeks and is now at the highest level since weekly population data was first published in 2011.
The latest figures come just days before the government’s temporary early release plan is effective on 10 September.
Meanwhile, with a population of 85 million, Turkey has the highest number of prisoners among Council of Europe member states, with approximately 350,000 inmates as of 31 January 2023.
According to Lausanne University's 2023 prison report, as of 31 January 2023, Turkey had 348,265 inmates and detainees.
