Qatar: Iran's targeting of Gulf states has changed perceptions of regional security
Doha, October 18 (Hibya) - Adviser to Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari stated that Iran's decision to target Gulf states had heightened perceptions of threats in the region. Al-Ansari said Gulf countries continued to pursue diplomatic solutions despite the ongoing war.
Adviser to Qatar's Prime Minister and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari discussed Iran's stance toward Gulf states and regional security developments in an interview with Al Arabiya.
Arguing that Iran's targeting of Gulf states was a deliberate political decision, Al-Ansari claimed that the decision had been made in Tehran within hours after February 28. He emphasized that the decision had not been made by the Gulf states, stating that Iran's actions had heightened perceptions of threats in the region and changed the Gulf countries' approach toward Iran.
Al-Ansari noted that Gulf countries had contributed to efforts to find diplomatic solutions to various international issues, including the Russia-Ukraine war and crises in Latin America and Asia. He said regional countries prioritized diplomacy even when crises reached their own doorsteps. Al-Ansari added that Gulf states had continued their diplomatic initiatives during the war.
Arguing that current crises had exposed the consequences of problems left unresolved in the past, Al-Ansari said the statements and positions of Gulf countries focused on rebuilding the regional security system, strengthening the Gulf's regional leadership and developing relations with wider geographical areas.
Al-Ansari stated that the ongoing developments could not be regarded as a short-term crisis, stressing the significance of the process for the future of the region and for international peace and security.
Emphasizing that peace processes entail substantial costs, Al-Ansari stated that Qatar had made significant efforts to achieve peace on various issues. However, he stressed that these efforts did not mean accepting acts of aggression against his country.
