Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi in Warsaw to discuss nuclear safety in Ukraine and threats to its energy infrastructure.
Sybiha said they discussed the situation at and around the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, drawing attention to the security threats posed by Russia's ongoing military activities and the need to ensure nuclear safety.
Expressing satisfaction with Grossi's decision to send missions to 19 electricity substations that are critical to the safe operation of Ukraine's nuclear power plants, Sybiha said this would be the most extensive deployment of its kind ever undertaken by the IAEA.
Sybiha emphasized that the move was an important and timely step toward preserving nuclear safety and security amid continuing attacks on Ukraine's energy system. "I am grateful to the IAEA Director General for the decision to dispatch missions to 19 electricity substations that are critical to the safe operation of Ukraine's nuclear power plants," he said.
Sybiha also referred to the summer recovery program organized for the children of Ukrainian nuclear energy workers and thanked Grossi, as well as the governments of Austria and Poland, for their cooperation in implementing the program.
Noting that they had agreed to continue such humanitarian initiatives, Sybiha expressed appreciation for Grossi's personal contributions and the IAEA's continued work in Ukraine.
