Sybiha: Preventing torture is a shared responsibility of the international community
Kyiv, October 1 (Hibya) - Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that Ukraine's candidate Anton Symkovych had been elected to the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture for the 2027-2030 term.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha commented on the election of Ukraine's candidate Anton Symkovych to the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture for the 2027-2030 term.
Sybiha said torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment constitute a clear violation of human dignity and fundamental human rights. Stating that combating such practices is a shared responsibility of the international community, Sybiha said preventing torture is of particular importance to Ukraine.
Sybiha stated that Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians unlawfully detained by Russia continue to be subjected to torture and other forms of ill-treatment in Russian captivity and detention facilities, noting that this constitutes a serious violation of international law and fundamental human rights standards.
Sybiha said Ukraine would continue to contribute to international efforts to prevent torture, strengthen safeguards for persons deprived of their liberty and ensure the effective implementation of international human rights standards, and thanked the states that supported the Ukrainian expert's candidacy.
