Syrian rebel groups enter Aleppo
Stockholm, November 30 (Hibya) – According to CNN, Syrian opposition forces entered Aleppo just three days after launching their surprise attacks. This marked the first time rebels had entered the country's second-largest city since government forces recaptured it in 2016.
According to CNN-verified footage, opposition forces reached the city center on Friday evening. The footage showed camouflage-clad fighters waving the Syrian opposition flag in a central square.
The attack, which began on Wednesday, was the first major escalation in years between the Syrian opposition and President Bashar al-Assad's regime, which has ruled the country since 2000.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), Syrian rebels have captured half the city. Armed groups currently control many areas of Aleppo, according to SOHR.
A commander of the armed groups called on the local population via a recorded message on social media to cooperate with the advancing forces.
Fighting began on Wednesday after a surprise attack by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group on the Syrian army in Aleppo province.
On Thursday, SOHR reported that over 200 people had been killed.
