The US president responded to journalists' questions during his meeting with the leader of El Salvador at the White House, saying, "When you start a war, you have to know that you can win it," and also held former US President Joe Biden responsible for the conflict.

Trump said, "Millions of people died because of three people. Number one is Putin, number two is Biden, who doesn't know what he's doing, and number three is Zelensky."

Trump, questioning Zelensky's competence, said that the Ukrainian leader "is always trying to buy missiles."

Trump added, "You don't start a war against someone who is 20 times bigger than you and then expect people to give you missiles."

The tension between Trump and the Ukrainian leader has been high since their heated clash at the White House in February.

In an interview before the latest Russian attack, Zelensky called on Trump to visit Ukraine before making a deal with Putin to end the war.

At least 35 people were killed and 117 injured in Russia's attack on the city of Sumy.

Moscow said it fired two Iskander missiles at a meeting of Ukrainian soldiers and killed 60 people, but did not provide any evidence.

Trump said he wants to "stop the killing" and hinted that proposals would be forthcoming, but did not provide details.
