Unannounced strike at Hamburg Airport affects more than 40,000 passengers
Hamburg, March 10 (Hibya) - An abrupt and unannounced strike by ground service personnel at Hamburg Airport on Sunday, March 9, canceled most flights and affected 40,000 passengers.
The strike, called by the powerful Ver.di union, resulted in an almost complete halt to departures and landings for most of the day.
Out of 280 scheduled flights, only 10 morning flights were able to take off.
This unexpected action stranded thousands of people at the beginning of the holiday season.
The impact of the strike was immediate and severe. Initially, the airport had planned for 144 arrivals and 139 departures, serving more than 40,000 passengers.
However, before the strike took full effect, only around ten flights managed to depart in the early morning.
Passengers were urged to contact their airlines directly and avoid traveling to the airport as all flights were effectively suspended.
Hamburg Airport Communications Director Katja Bromm strongly condemned Ver.di’s actions. “The behavior of the Ver.di union is disgraceful,” she said.
The disruption did not end on Sunday. The Ver.di union announced an extension of the strike, calling security checkpoint personnel to walk off the job on Monday, March 10.
This escalation further paralyzed operations and made passenger departures impossible. While arrivals were still technically possible, significant delays and cancellations were expected.
Bromm confirmed: “There will be no departures from Hamburg Airport on Monday.”
“Arrivals are possible, but we also expect major disruptions and cancellations,” she added.
Monday’s strike is expected to affect another 40,000 passengers. A total of 143 departures and 141 arrivals had been scheduled for the day. Travelers were once again advised to contact their airlines and avoid traveling to the airport.
