Venezuelan opposition leader appears in public for the first time in months
Oslo, 11 December (Hibya) – Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who had been in hiding for months, appeared late at night waving from the balcony of a hotel in Oslo. This was her first public appearance since January.
Despite a travel ban and threats by the Venezuelan government to declare her a fugitive if she travelled, Machado made a secret journey.
In an emotional moment, Machado waved, blew kisses, and sang together with cheering supporters gathered in front of the Grand Hotel in the Norwegian capital.
Early on Wednesday, her daughter Ana Corina Sosa accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on her behalf.
The Nobel Institute awarded Machado this year’s prize for “her struggle to ensure a fair and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela.”
Machado had not seen her children for nearly two years, having sent them away from Venezuela for their safety.
