Von der Leyen congratulates Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navi Pillay
Brussels, October 9 (Hibya) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated lawyer and human rights advocate Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on the Nobel Peace Prize, saying Pillay had fought for justice and human dignity in the face of apartheid-era violence and the Rwandan genocide.

In a statement on her social media account, von der Leyen said Pillay is among those who have dedicated their lives to justice, peace and human dignity.
Von der Leyen said Pillay had confronted some of humanity’s darkest periods, from the violence of South Africa’s apartheid regime to the horrors of the Rwandan genocide, and had not backed down in the face of human rights violations.
Emphasizing that Pillay defended the rights of the persecuted, the vulnerable, the voiceless and the excluded, von der Leyen said the rule of law must prevail over the law of the powerful.
Von der Leyen said that in a world where justice is needed more than ever, Pillay’s courage and moral clarity serve as a guide.
