Zelenskyy positively assessed his meeting with US envoys
Stockholm, December 26 (Hibya) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Thursday that he held “very good” talks with Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on how to end the war.
In a statement on Telegram, Zelenskyy said: “It was really a good meeting: we discussed many details and good ideas.”
He added: “There are some new ideas to bring real peace even closer, and they concern formats, meetings, and of course the timeline.”
Zelenskyy’s remarks came a day after he said Ukraine had gained some limited concessions in the latest version of a US-led draft peace plan currently being reviewed by Moscow.
The 20-point peace plan accepted by the United States and Ukraine is seen as an updated version of the initial draft prepared by Witkoff several weeks ago.
The draft had been widely assessed as largely focused on Russia’s maximalist pre-invasion demands, which Kyiv and Europeans said amounted to a de facto surrender of Ukraine.
Announcing the updated proposal on Wednesday, Zelenskyy said it offers Russia the possibility of Ukrainian troops withdrawing from the east and the creation of a demilitarized zone in their place.
He noted that the plan now includes security guarantees from the United States, NATO and Europeans for coordinated military intervention in the event of a renewed Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Moscow currently controls about 75 percent of the Donetsk region and around 99 percent of the neighboring Luhansk region, collectively known as the Donbas region.
