Anand: Keeping sea lanes secure is vital for economic security
New York, September 23 (Hibya) - Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said that more than 80 percent of global trade is conducted by sea, stressing that keeping sea lanes open and secure is important for economic security.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand made statements regarding the ministerial meeting on maritime security. Anand said she co-chaired the meeting, attended by foreign ministers and senior officials, together with Estonia, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Japan and the European Union.
Anand said, “More than 80 percent of global trade is conducted by sea. Keeping sea lanes open and secure is vital for economic security.”
Noting that disruptions at sea, from the Black Sea to the Strait of Hormuz and the South China Sea, can quickly affect economies around the world, Anand said the meeting focused on protecting critical underwater infrastructure, countering shadow fleets and implementing the principles set out in the G7 Charlevoix Declaration on maritime security and prosperity.
