Costa: We have decided to convene an extraordinary European Council meeting
Brussels, January 18 (Hibya) - European Council President Costa confirmed the common position on the Greenland-related tensions following consultations with European Union (EU) members and decided to convene an extraordinary European Council meeting.
European Council President Costa once again reaffirmed the European Union’s common stance after consultations with member states regarding the recent tensions related to Greenland.
In his statement, Costa underlined the following points:
Unity on the principles of international law, territorial integrity, and national sovereignty; support and solidarity with Denmark and Greenland; recognition of shared transatlantic interests in preserving peace and security in the Arctic, particularly through cooperation within NATO; the shared assessment that tariffs would harm transatlantic relations and are incompatible with the EU–US trade agreement; determination to defend against any form of coercion; the will to continue constructive dialogue with the United States on all issues of mutual interest.
Pointing to the importance of recent developments, Costa announced his decision to convene an extraordinary European Council meeting in the coming days in order to strengthen coordination.
