Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Burak Uzel made a statement regarding insulin resistance, one of the underlying causes of the increasing prevalence of obesity and chronic fatigue in society. Uzel noted that assessing health status solely based on fasting blood glucose measurements can be misleading.

Dr. Uzel explained that many people experience difficulty losing weight, drowsiness after meals, and frequent cravings for sweets even though their blood glucose values fall within the normal range. He said this may result from the body producing excessive amounts of insulin to balance sugar levels. He added that this condition is medically known as insulin resistance and emphasized that insulin levels and the HOMA-IR index should be taken into account in evaluations.

Highlighting the importance of correctly interpreting test results, Uzel stated that ideal fasting insulin levels should be between 4 and 6 mU/L, while values above 10 signal risk. He added that the target HOMA-IR value is around 1, and results of 1.5 or higher may indicate difficulty in managing blood sugar.

Uzel also noted that excessive insulin secretion can lead to sudden drops in blood sugar, causing hypoglycemic attacks and a constant feeling of hunger, trapping individuals in a vicious cycle. He emphasized that especially individuals with fat accumulation around the waist should not rely solely on blood sugar measurements and that insulin and HOMA-IR analyses must be performed under specialist supervision.

Dr. Burak Uzel works as an Internal Medicine Specialist at Medicana Ataköy Hospital. He also takes part in projects that bring together health and technology and carries out initiatives to raise public health awareness through digital platforms.
