Coup leader in Gabon wins election by a wide margin
Stockholm, April 14 (Hibya) – General Brice Oligui Nguema, the military leader who led the 2030 coup that ended nearly 60 years of dynasty in Gabon, has won Saturday’s presidential election with more than 90% of the vote, according to preliminary results.
Prior to the vote, critics argued that the new constitution and electoral law were designed to pave an easy path for Oligui Nguema to assume high office.
Several prominent opposition figures who could have posed a serious political challenge were excluded from the race.
The election victory further consolidated Nguema’s power, nearly two years after he ousted Ali Bongo, who had ruled Gabon since 1967.
The 50-year-old Nguema faced seven other candidates, including former Prime Minister under Bongo, Alain Claude Bilie-by-Nze, and two senior members of the former ruling PDG party, Stephane Germain Iloko and Alain Simplice Boungoueres.
