EU adopts new safe country rules for asylum applications
Brussels, February 10 (Hibya) - The safe country list has been expanded for citizens of Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco, and Tunisia; it was reported that EU member states will be able to make agreements with third countries.
The European Parliament approved changes to the EU asylum procedures on Tuesday, adopting regulations that will ensure faster processing of asylum applications.
Under these changes, Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, Kosovo, India, Morocco, and Tunisia will be recognized as safe countries for their own citizens. EU candidate countries will also be considered safe by default.
Additionally, EU member states will apply new criteria to determine whether a country is safe when the applicant is not a citizen of that country, and they will be able to make agreements with third countries to allow the examination of applications in those countries.
In the vote at the European Parliament, 408 members voted in favor of supporting these changes.
