In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 index closed the day up 0.83 percent at 10,871.02 points.
In Italy, the FTSE MIB index fell 0.69 percent to 51,698.19 points.
Meanwhile, the pan-European STOXX Europe 600 index, Germany's DAX, and France's CAC 40 all ended the day largely unchanged.
