Ghebreyesus: Visceral leishmaniasis cases fell by 58% over 10 years
Geneva, Jan. 12 (Hibya) – World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced that global cases of visceral leishmaniasis, the most dangerous form of the disease, declined by 58% between 2014 and 2024.
The World Health Organization reported that the global incidence of visceral leishmaniasis decreased by 58% from 2014 to 2024.
Ghebreyesus noted that in 2023 Bangladesh became the first country to eliminate the disease as a public health problem.
It was stated that WHO-recommended measures, including rapid diagnostic tests, effective treatment protocols, and vector and animal reservoir control, save thousands of lives each year.
The organization emphasized that the disease remains endemic in 80 countries and that control measures must be sustained in all regions.
