Guterres: A step in the right direction
New York, April 17 (Hibya) - United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed Iran’s decision to open the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels, emphasizing the importance of international freedom of navigation.
UN Secretary-General Guterres described Iran’s decision to allow commercial vessels to pass through the Strait of Hormuz during the ceasefire period as “a step in the right direction.”
Guterres stated that the United Nations’ position is clear, stressing that international navigation rights and freedoms in the Strait of Hormuz must be fully restored and respected by all parties.
It was noted that this step could contribute to building trust between the parties during the ceasefire and strengthen the ongoing dialogue process facilitated by Pakistan.
Guterres emphasized that protecting freedom of navigation is critical for the security of international maritime trade and regional stability.
