Guterres: hope in Haiti is fragile, the international community must not turn away
Port-au-Prince, 16 June (Hibya) - United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, during a solidarity visit to Haiti’s capital, said the humanitarian situation in the country is “desperately difficult” and made an urgent appeal to the international community.
UN Secretary-General Guterres drew attention to the humanitarian crisis in Haiti during his visit to Port-au-Prince. He described the situation on the ground as “hopeless”, while also noting there are “weak but real signs of hope”.
Addressing the international community, Guterres said: “Do not turn your eyes away from Haiti”, stressing the need for stronger global attention to the crisis.
He also said the UN stands in solidarity with the people of Haiti and called for increased humanitarian aid and strengthened support mechanisms on the ground.
