Israeli soldier linked to Iran sentenced to 5 years in prison for espionage
Jerusalem, July 15 (Hibya) - The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that a soldier who admitted to contacting a foreign agent and transferring information that could benefit the enemy has been sentenced to five years in prison.
The IDF announced that a soldier who confessed to contacting a foreign agent and providing information that could benefit the enemy has been sentenced to five years in prison.
According to the IDF, following the incident, the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division, Lahav 433, and the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) conducted a joint investigation, which resulted in the filing of an indictment.
According to the statement, during 2025 the defendant received job offers from various individuals through his Telegram account. Some of those individuals were found to have links to Iran. An Iranian foreign agent later asked the soldier whether he wanted to earn money in exchange for carrying out various filming assignments.
The statement said the soldier sent the Iranian agent two videos showing missile interceptions filmed in civilian areas during Operation "Rising Lion" and received payment for one of them. He also sent several other videos filmed in civilian areas, as well as footage of a missile impact that he had found online.
The IDF added that the defendant later informed his unit commanders that he had been in contact with a foreign agent due to the pressure he felt, and he was arrested by the Shin Bet the following day.
The military prosecution requested a seven-year prison sentence due to the seriousness of the offense and deterrence considerations, while the military court took into account that the defendant was an active-duty soldier, that the country was in a state of war, and the severity of the offenses committed.
The court sentenced the defendant to five years in prison, a suspended prison sentence, a fine of 1,000 shekels, and demotion to the rank of private.
