More than 2,000 hectares burned in France
Paris, July 15 (Hibya) - More than 2,000 hectares of land have been destroyed by wildfires in the historic Fontainebleau Forest near the French capital, Paris.
According to CCTV, the first wildfire, which broke out on Sunday evening, damaged approximately 1,600 hectares of woodland. A second fire, which started on Monday near the grounds of the historic Château de Fontainebleau, spread overnight due to strong winds and burned an additional 450 hectares.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said preliminary investigation findings indicate that the fire may have been deliberately started. The Paris Prosecutor's Office announced on Tuesday that six people had been taken into custody on suspicion of involvement in the incident.
According to reports from the area, although part of the fire has been brought under control, thick smoke and the strong smell from the burned land persist. Firefighters continue working around the clock to detect and extinguish hotspots that are reigniting because of the wind.
A senior fire service official said they could not yet guarantee that the wildfire would be fully brought under control within the next two days.
