Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the approval of an unprecedented national plan to combat organized crime.
Netanyahu said the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) would join the Israel Police in the effort, with an investment of approximately half a billion shekels. Under the plan, a special Shin Bet unit will be established to combat arms smuggling and the illegal weapons trade, while intelligence and operational capabilities will be strengthened. A national special unit within the police will also be created to use advanced technologies and methods against organized crime groups.
Netanyahu said, "We will not accept a reality of murder, violence, extortion, and criminal terror on Israel's streets."
He stressed that all state resources would be used to reach the leaders of criminal organizations, cut off their sources of power and financing, dismantle their infrastructure, and restore public security. "We will act decisively, forcefully, and without compromise. We will restore security for all citizens of Israel," Netanyahu said.
