Ontario imposes 25% additional tax on energy exports to the U.S. in response to Trump tariffs
Ontario, March 11 (Hibya) - Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Monday that the province has imposed a 25% additional tax on electricity exports to the U.S. states of New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, in protest of Donald Trump's tariffs.
Ford stated, "President Trump's tariffs are a disaster for the U.S. economy. They make life more expensive for American families and businesses."
He added, "Ontario will not back down until the tariff threat is completely removed. We will stand strong, use every tool at our disposal, and do whatever it takes to protect Ontario."
Ford emphasized that the government has instructed the province’s Independent Electricity System Operator to impose an additional fee of $10 per megawatt-hour on any generator exporting electricity to the U.S.
According to the statement, this additional fee is expected to generate daily revenues between $432,000 and $576,000.
