Oslo harbor becomes preferred port for drug smugglers
Oslo, July 30 (Hibya) - Oslo's port has become the port of choice for criminals and notorious gangs in Europe, Oslo Mayor Anne Lindboe said.
“Smugglers are realizing their intentions and the serious consequences of using a poorly protected port to get their filth into Norway,” Lindboe said, adding that up to NOK eight billion worth of drugs are being smuggled through the Port of Oslo, the country's largest port.
Oslo Mayor Anne Lindboe (H) said in Dagsrevyen on Wednesday that there are no scanners in Oslo Port. On Thursday, she corrected this, explaining that there is no permanent, fixed scanner in the port but that several customs areas share one scanner.
When this scanner is unavailable in Oslo Port, customs officers use hand-held X-ray machines.
Mayor Lindboe emphasized that the cocaine found in Bama last year was an example that the control was not good enough: “We scan very little of the incoming cargo. The result is what we are seeing in Oslo right now.
In 2023, several large batches of cocaine in banana boxes were seized in Oslo.
