UN Secretary-General Guterres noted that if the laws approved by the Israeli Knesset are implemented, it would likely hinder UNRWA from continuing its essential work in the occupied Palestinian territories, with devastating consequences for Palestinian refugees.

Guterres urged Israel to act in accordance with its obligations under the UN Charter and international law, saying:

“National legislation cannot alter these obligations. I am bringing this matter to the attention of the UN General Assembly and will keep the Assembly informed as the situation develops. There is no alternative to UNRWA.”
