Palestine supports EU decision to sanction settlers
Jerusalem, May 12 (Hibya) - The State of Palestine (MFA) welcomed the European Union’s decision to impose sanctions on illegal Israeli settlers in the West Bank, describing the move as an important step for accountability and the implementation of international law.
The State of Palestine (MFA) announced the European Union’s new sanctions package targeting Israeli settler organizations and individuals alleged to support illegal settlement activities in the West Bank.
In a statement, the ministry said the unanimous decision by European Union countries was an important step toward strengthening accountability mechanisms regarding the increasing settler violence and attacks in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The statement welcomed the European Union’s assessment that settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, are illegal, while emphasizing that the sanctions should be supported by broader and more deterrent measures aimed at stopping settlement activities.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry called on the European Union to prevent settlement products from entering European markets, end cooperation with institutions and companies linked to settlements, and suspend the Association Agreement with Israel.
The statement also stressed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital is necessary to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.
