Belgian Foreign Minister Prevot said, “As of Monday, January 19, our country will take part in the international reconnaissance mission to be conducted in Greenland.”

Noting that Belgium will send an officer to the Arctic region as part of the mission, Prevot stated: “This reconnaissance mission is being carried out under Danish command and is part of broader efforts aimed at strengthening NATO’s military presence and training capabilities in the Arctic.”

Referring to the objective of the mission, Prevot said: “The aim is to identify opportunities for possible future military exercises in Greenland and to assess options for increasing the military presence for deterrence and defense purposes.”

Commenting on Belgium’s possible next steps, Prevot added: “Following the reconnaissance mission, additional consultations will be held within NATO regarding training and exercise activities, and Belgium’s potential participation in operations such as Arctic Sentry will be decided later in consultation with government partners.”

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken, for his part, said: “Security in the Arctic region is of strategic importance for the entire alliance. Our participation in this reconnaissance mission demonstrates our commitment within NATO.”
