Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot made a statement on the diplomatic process in the Middle East following his visit to Beirut.

Referring to his contacts in Lebanon, Prevot said: "I welcome Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement of his intention to begin negotiations with Lebanon as soon as possible."

Stating that he supports the Lebanese government, Prevot said: "Yesterday in Beirut, I supported President Aoun and Prime Minister Salam in their calls to initiate such negotiations."

Repeating his call to halt the clashes, Prevot stated: "An immediate ceasefire by all parties is a priority. Hezbollah must disarm. Peace must prevail."
