Putin says he is open to direct talks with Ukraine as US pressure grows
New York, April 22 (Hibya) – According to CNN, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that he is open to holding bilateral talks with Ukraine for the first time in years, as the US puts pressure on both sides to reach a swift peace agreement.
After Washington warned it might abandon its efforts to end the conflict if no progress is made, officials from the US, Europe, and Ukraine are preparing to meet in London this week.
Speaking to reporters, Putin said that it might be possible to discuss stopping attacks on civilian infrastructure directly with Kyiv.
He also referenced the 30-hour surprise Easter ceasefire implemented by Russia, which both sides accused each other of violating, saying: "We have a positive attitude toward the ceasefire."
Putin added: "That is why we have always maintained a positive stance on any peace initiative. We hope representatives of the Kyiv regime feel the same way."
Ukraine, which called for extending the ceasefire before it expired on Sunday, has repeatedly accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians with air and drone strikes, while President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Moscow to stop the attacks.
Putin acknowledged that recent Russian strikes hit civilian facilities in Ukraine but claimed they were being used for military purposes.
"This is the issue we need to examine. All of this needs to be thoroughly investigated. Perhaps bilaterally, as a result of dialogue. We do not rule it out. Therefore, we will analyze everything and make the appropriate decisions for the future," he said.
