Separatist parties lose ground in Spain's Catalan regional elections
Madrid, May 13 (Hibya) - Separatist parties in the northeastern Spanish region of Catalonia are in danger of losing the power they have held for a decade, with the pro-union Socialist party appearing to have won the most votes in Sunday's elections, with ballot counting almost complete.
Four pro-independence parties, led by former regional president Carles Puigdemont's Unity Party, are expected to win 61 seats, short of the 68 needed for a majority in parliament.
The Socialists, led by former health minister Salvador Illa, did not have the majority to form a government despite winning the most votes, 42 seats, up from 33 in 2021.
The Socialists will need to win the support of other parties to install Illa. Deals in the coming days, perhaps weeks, will be vital in forming a government.
But Illa's rise is a good sign for Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the Socialists ahead of the European Parliament elections next month.
