Spanish PM files lawsuit against judge investigating his wife
Madrid, July 31 (Hibya) - Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has filed a lawsuit against the judge investigating his wife for alleged corruption and influence peddling, accusing him of abuse of judicial office.
News of the lawsuit emerged on Tuesday afternoon, just hours after Sánchez's wife Begoña Gómez exercised her legal right not to testify in a case related to her business activities.
Gómez is being investigated for alleged corruption and influence peddling following a complaint by the pressure group Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), which has a long history of using the courts to pursue its political goals and has far-right connections.
Manos Limpias accused Gómez of using her influence as the prime minister's wife to sponsor a graduate program she ran at the university.
Prosecutors in Madrid have asked the court to drop the case due to lack of evidence, and the investigation continues. However, a report by the Guardia Civil police found no evidence that Gómez had committed a crime.
Sánchez had offered to submit written evidence to Judge Juan Carlos Peinado, despite calling the allegations against his wife baseless and politically motivated smears.
