Sybiha: Our history and our Lavra cannot be stolen by anyone
Kyiv, August 15 (Hibya) – Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on the 975th anniversary of the founding of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra that the monastery is one of the important symbols of Ukraine’s state tradition and early Christianity in Europe.
Sybiha said that a thousand years ago Kyiv was an important crossroads through which Christian civilization reached western Europe, describing Ukraine’s path toward European Union membership as “restoring our place in the European family.” Sybiha also criticized Russia’s narratives about a “thousand-year history.”
Claiming that Russia, unable to develop its own history, is trying to appropriate the history and identities of its neighbors, Sybiha said, “Whatever Russia does, we have our own agenda. And we have our history. And we have our Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, which no one can steal or destroy.”
Sybiha also said that on the Lavra’s 975th anniversary, a new tradition was launched symbolizing its centuries-long history and Ukraine’s journey toward its millennium, with the bells ringing together.
