Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized Russia’s activities in the field of nuclear energy.

Sybiha said, “Rosatom is not just another energy company; it is an instrument of Russia’s goal to establish a global monopoly in nuclear energy.” Arguing that Rosatom is not a reliable partner, Sybiha said Ukraine has long warned European governments about cooperation with the company.

Calling on the European Union and its member states, Sybiha said, “Please listen to Ukraine. No country in the world knows better than Ukraine why Moscow cannot be trusted in the field of nuclear energy.”

Arguing that Russia is the greatest threat to nuclear safety on the European continent, Sybiha pointed to various developments ranging from the 1986 Chernobyl disaster to Russia’s occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Sybiha also argued that damage to the New Safe Confinement at Chernobyl, drones flying over operating nuclear power plants and attacks on critical substations pose risks to nuclear safety.

The Ukrainian foreign minister said, “In the face of this picture, the only responsible policy is to end all nuclear energy cooperation with Moscow, eliminate all dependence on Russia in the nuclear energy sector and impose sanctions on Rosatom.”
