Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha discussed nuclear safety with the IAEA
Munich, February 13 (Hibya) – Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized that Russia’s attacks on energy infrastructure increase nuclear safety risks and highlighted the importance of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Sybiha met with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi. During the meeting, it was stressed that Russia’s reckless attacks on Ukraine’s energy system pose radiation safety risks to nuclear facilities and to all of Europe.
Sybiha expressed appreciation for the high level of professionalism shown by Ukrainian energy experts operating nuclear power plants under Russian attacks on the energy grid. The meeting also addressed Ukraine’s peace efforts, its position regarding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and the need to counter threats originating from Russia.
The IAEA’s decision to expand its monitoring missions at nuclear energy facilities in Ukraine was welcomed. Ukraine presented proposals to amend the IAEA statute to restrict the rights and privileges of a member state recognized by the United Nations General Assembly as an aggressor state.
Minister Sybiha thanked the agency for the medical equipment and other assistance provided and proposed further expansion of humanitarian cooperation.
