UN Forms Independent Panel to Investigate UNRWA
STOCKHOLM-06.02.2024-HIBYA- In a statement issued by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, it was announced that an independent panel would be formed to investigate UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, and assess whether the organization has been "objective" in its actions during the Gaza war.
This announcement comes following allegations that UNRWA employees were involved in attacks by the Palestinian Islamic Movement against Israel. After these allegations, many countries, including Sweden, announced suspending their support to UNRWA.
Approximately a dozen individuals were dismissed, and the organization also initiated an internal investigation.
UNRWA actively operates with over 30,000 Palestinian staff in areas including the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as well as in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and the Gaza Strip, providing assistance and protection to Palestinian refugees.
