UNRWA: Finding a political solution is not part of the agency's mandate
New York, August 18 (Hibya) - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said it provides assistance and protection to Palestine refugees until a just and lasting solution is found, stressing that finding a political solution is not part of its mandate.
UNRWA issued a statement regarding its mandate.
UNRWA said it provides education, health, relief and social services, as well as microfinance services, until a just and lasting solution is found for Palestine refugees. The agency said it operates in both humanitarian assistance and development.
The statement said that for more than 75 years, UNRWA has contributed to human development and stability despite the absence of a political solution.
UNRWA stated, “The Agency's role is to support Palestine Refugees. Finding a political solution is not part of the Agency's mandate. This responsibility belongs to the international community.”
UNRWA, which was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1949, continues to operate under a temporary mandate that is regularly renewed by member states.
