European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen commented on the new sanctions regime prepared as part of the fight against irregular migration and reaffirmed Europe's determination in its migration policy.

Explaining the purpose of the new measures, von der Leyen said: "Today, we are introducing a new sanctions regime against migrant smugglers and traffickers. We all share one common goal."

Emphasizing the importance of protecting human lives, she added: "To put them out of business and save the lives of thousands of people dreaming of a better future."

Von der Leyen concluded her remarks by saying: "In Europe, it should be us who decide who comes to us and under what conditions."
