Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN), Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, made remarks at a high-level open session held at the UN Security Council.

Referring to the importance of freedom of navigation, Al-Thani said, “Freedom of navigation in international waterways is a fundamental principle of international law.”

Stating that the meeting was held at a critical time, Al-Thani said, “Threats to the security of international waterways and freedom of navigation are increasing, and this poses risks to international peace, security and the economy, especially in vital maritime corridors such as the Strait of Hormuz.”

Explaining her approach to resolving the crisis, Al-Thani said, “Serious dialogue, commitment to the principles of international law and good neighborly relations are essential elements in resolving crises.”

Al-Thani emphasized that attempts to obstruct navigation in the Strait of Hormuz pose a serious threat to international peace and security.
